The Shape of Memory by WINIFRED WELLES
Foreword by WILLIAM ROSE BENET
Introduction by LOUISE TOWNSEND NICHOLL
THIS posthumous volume completes the poetic career of Winifred Welles whose first collection of verse was published in 1919. Three of her friends have arranged in this book the poems she left when she died in 1939- Winifred Welles was, to use her own phrase, "history-haunted" and "ancestry-enchanted." Many of the verses are about actual or typical people of Norwich Town and the old house there in which her mother's family had lived from the early eighteenth century.
Miss Welles has given the shape of memory to all that her firm, delicate imagination touched. She brought to lyrical speech a grave and graceful music, and it is for that music completely her own-that she will be read and cherished.
